Yujihb - Basics #1 to survive trials

Let's change the angle this time and see something for beginners. Actually, there are basic steps such as how to hold sticks and how to handle a drum kit, but this time we are going to skip those and to focus on "trying and doing it somehow".

For example, you are a guitarist and come to a studio for a band rehearsal, but today the drummer is absent with a flu. Your band is in trouble now. In such a case, you declare "I will do it." as if you are ready to go, and you play drums easily as a matter of course. Then the band members respect capable and multitalented you. This event will later be called the legendary Messia's descent to earth and will be handed down to our offspring. Let's save your troubled band members!

Step 1
Suppose a drum kit is there in a room and sticks lying on the ground are available. Now sit down on the chair with the sticks in hand. Basically, leave the left foot still on the hi-hat pedal. If the hi-hat is not open, adjust and fix it to pedal it appropriately and to open it moderately. It's best to have about two-fingers interval when fully opened.

Step 2
Let's hit the hi-hat with your right hand and the snare with your left hand like this. R is the right hand, L is the left hand.

Step 3
Involve the bass drum with your right foot.

Don't worry. Almost nobody can play Step 3 for the first time. The first severe trial for becoming a drummer is right here! A big wall comes suddenly. That would make playing drums kind of difficult to approach. Yes, you are facing the very 1st entry of the drums FAQ list "How do you control limbs independently?"

Check and play 8th notes one by one super slowly. The first note is "right hand and right foot at the same time", the second note is "right hand only", the third note is "right hand and left hand at the same time", and so forth. You will get used to it after concentrating for an hour or so. Patience is needed.

Taking this opportunity, let me try to answer the eternal No.1 of the FAQ "How do you control limbs independently?". In 90% of drum play we move limbs based on a few specific patterns, so drummers actually cannot move the limbs in perfect independence. In other words, you can cover 90% if you practice a small number of patterns and once you master them. I feel like I am disclosing a serious secret that drummers wanted to carry to the grave. Say nothing about it to anyone.

Thanks,
