What's happening to Frank Zappa - Keep It Greasy (Joe's Garage) - 21 over 16

Arf arf ARF! (Arf! - Zappa Wiki Jawaka). So, Frank Zappa again. Continue to follow odd meters in the song Keep It Greasy!

The drummer is Vinnie Colaiuta of course. As is commonly known he makes odd meters look effortless. By the way, Vinnie Colaiuta plays with traditional grip. Traditional grip is to hold a stick with your left hand in a characteristic way, and is usually used when marching drums, jazz drums, etc.. I do not see it much in recent drums superstars. I only give you one example ottomh right now; Dave Weckl. Would you give us other examples? There seems to be few. Maybe because I just don't know it.

See the previous article for 19/16:

The odd meters in the spotlight today is 21/16. The song goes with the disco style made by the offbeat open hi-hat pattern during the chorus, and after a break finally we get lost in the world of 21/16!

At the same time of the accents on the snare, the bright and clear hand craps are overdubbed and that is the first clue. You can see that one bar consists of two blocks. The first block is the first 9 notes, the second block is the remaining 12 notes. 4 notes + 5 notes in the first block are a bit tricky, but we may not stray into the odd meters once we catch the second block is actually 3/4.

I don't know why, but I can't get the vocal part out of my mind. The words "I know a few that need to ease it behind" at the end of this section, sound as if they sing in two bars of 4/4. If you do such a thing on this 21/16, it would be a disruptively complicated polyrhythm. Meanwhile, strange enough, we can sing along casually. I have no idea how this is written on the score. Or it is still possible that the vocal part is just overdubbed and is not precisely written in the score. Whoa. we can never be too sure. I have to stop reading into it too much.

Thanks,
